thriller breaking open has more to do with the LONG overdue accolades america has FINALLY given black artists after 80 years of injustice.
threatening to shut mtv down if they don’t play billie jean has MORE to do with the inequity social problems of america than it did billie jean being a brilliant song.
billie jean IS a brilliant song.
but the TIMING of its release had a WHOLE hell of alot to do with what was going on at the time.
imagine if they gave “super freak” love on mtv when they were supposed to.—you gonna tell me the song that sampled “super freak” could build an empire—but not the song that gave birth to it?
“super freak” was a victim of coming a year too early. when the invisible “no blacks allowed” sign was disguised as a “we play what our audience calls for” game.
that said yes of course. the luck and timing of thriller could NOT have happened to a better person and im HAPPY that i was alive at the time. mike worked hard to get to where he was and this is by far NOT an anti MJ post.

-the idea of “watering down” music so that “america” (white people) can easily digest the music would not even be a factor in the creative process (and for those scratching heads that is the NUMBER ONE priority with songwriters and producers—the “popness” and accessibility of a song to someone who needs sugar before the medicine going down….—cause if that were NOT the case then P FUNK woulda had number one hit after number one hit in their 70’s heyday.
-pop radio, news outlets, and the like would accept all artists in their formats.
(once again for late comers, mtv refused to play the billie jean video because “black music” was not their forte. —”we are a rock channel”—sony threatened to take all videos off the air if mtv did not play it. it went from being a token move to singlehandedly allowing us to FINALLY play in some long overdue reindeer games.)
so again.
MJ is more a social experiment in my eyes.

face is a regular on most fashion mags
sells out stadiums
wins countless grammies
makes anthems
got bank

He’s hardly the first person to express this sentiment… I can remember Bjork saying years ago that Destiny’s Child was this generation’s Michael Jackson.
There’s an argument to be made there, of course, but by and large I don’t buy it because it ignores the fact that Mike actually had SONGS.

It was him and a mic. that is it. that is all. HE captivated the world. period. just MJ and a mic. no dancers, no enterouge……i mean, I guess we could count the hat and glove……but come the fuck on………let MJ rest.
As someone who has generally looked at her material with a mixture of disdain and disgust…I can NOT clap to this.

Tina Turner, Eddy Grant (Electric Avenue) and Donna Summers were part of MTV’s rotation prior to ‘Billie Jean’ yet their albums didn’t sell 1.5 million albums a week when their video premiered.
Thriller did. (after the Thriller video was debuted).
I had 2 copies of Thriller (a long story behind that) before I ever say the Billie Jean video.
Shit…All Night Long used to play on almost every damn radio station at the same time!
But Thriller sold 110 million albums worldwide.

lol this is too funny to irritate me. But lemme just say this – after motown 25 the whole world was bowing down to Mike, that white glove and fedora. The next day (until the day Mike left us) the man could not go ANYWHERE without being mobbed. When has this happened to Bey??? Bey is not a genius. She’s pretty and can sing and dance fairly well. Mike is a musical GENIUS. So stop the nonsense!
You really should send this out to ?uestlove and all the other people who feel she or anyone else is even that hot to be compared to him!! It’s not impossible to top what Beyonce did if she hadn’t started out in a group a lot of people probably wouldn’t be comparing her to him!!! Another thing Beyonce was a great entertainer, but Michael was more than that his music had meaning, he made fans all over the world faint, cry, and go nuts over him, he broke so many records, he is the reason African Americans are able to have their music played on MTV not only that but all three of Beyonce’s album can’t even match up to the sales of Thriller not to mention everything has already been done for Beyonce!!! Michael also has his own style he was creative, an innovator, artistic, original, he cared about the world, he even took so much of his time to find donor for a sick little boy and guess what because of Michael that little boy lived!!! I mean who do you know has done stuff like that? Michael even made songs about how much he cares about the world and they weren’t just for charities they were put on his albums meaning he didn’t wait for a disaster to happen to start making caring songs; he cared about the world 24/7!! Let’s just put it like this I have nieces and nephews whenever we are going somewhere they are always asking to listen to Michael Jackson and they know his dance moves. When I sing his songs they know exactly who it is if I sing a Beyonce, Chris Brown, or Ne-yo song they don’t even know their names, yet they hear their music all the time, but they are just now getting use to Michael and they already know who he is that say’s a lot!! I also know there are plenty of kids who know Beyonce, Usher, Chris Brown etc, but that’s because they are still relevant, but I wonder if 20-45 years from now if our grandchildren and so on will know who Beyonce, Usher, and Chris Brown are (they probably will if their parents are listening to them) and if they will be doing their dance moves just saying)!!!
Let’s just be realistic here when and if Beyonce wins Legendary awards 25+ years from now do her fans and the media really think she is going to be introduced as “The New Michael Jackson?” NO she’s not and we’re not even sure if the world still be standing 25+ years from now!!! God will be coming and he will get rid of all evil then Paradise will be here so while Beyonce is hot and popular at the moment we’re not sure where her status will be years after she retires!!! The world might be over before she can become a legend you never know!!! This isn’t even important for real let’s concentrate on more important stuff!!! At the end of the day Michael is Michael “The Greatest Entertainer of All Time” that’s never going to change!!! Even after Beyonce retires it will remain that way and I’m sure when our kids have grandchildren they are probably going to be comparing a male or female artist of their time to him!!!!
